The Natural Language Interaction Protocol and Standard for AI Agents

· ArXiv · AI/CL/LG ·
NLIP is presented as a standardized application-layer protocol meant to let AI agents interoperate across frameworks, models, tools, and enterprise systems.

The paper says NLIP, standardized by Ecma International, uses a lightweight semantic message envelope over transports including HTTP/HTTPS, WebSocket, and AMQP. It is designed for NLIP-aware agents and gateways to adapt between clients, agents, context stores, ontologies, tools, services, and other protocols. The authors position it alongside emerging agent protocols such as MCP and A2A, and say the paper covers its design rationale, message model, security considerations, reference implementation, applications, and adoption signals.
