Does Your Agent's Memory Survive a Model Upgrade? A Controlled Study of Memory Portability
Fixed-schema memory survived model swaps; compressed notes and mixed RAG indexes did not.
The paper tests 48 synthetic histories across four memory formats: raw long-context history, RAG chunks, model-written notes, and a fixed-schema knowledge graph. KG-fixed was essentially unchanged after a writer swap, while NOTES shifted sharply depending on migration direction. Mixed embedding indexes recovered only a fraction of the gain from full re-embedding, and store-only repair of NOTES missed the 90% recovery target in every case. ArXiv · AI/CL/LG's note
