Hister: A private search engine for the pages you visit and the files you keep
Hister builds a local full-text index of chosen browsing and file content, with optional MCP access for AI assistants.
It runs on a local or user-controlled server, with no telemetry or mandatory cloud sync by default. Browser extensions for Firefox and Chrome can index visited pages, and existing browser history, bookmarks, directories, and files can be imported. Search is available through the web UI, terminal tools, TUI, and MCP, with optional semantic search through a configured embeddings endpoint. Remote integrations can send document text outside the server, so the project flags privacy review before enabling them. HN · GitHub AI's note
