Honeycomb-Surfels: Compact Hexagonal Primitives for Efficient Scene Rendering and Reconstruction

· ArXiv · AI/CL/LG ·
Hexels improved rendering quality over memory-matched 2D Gaussian Splatting while using less training VRAM across 34 scenes.

The authors report gains of 4.53–7.38 dB in PSNR across datasets. Hexels use planar hexagonal elements with color that varies across each element, allowing fewer, larger primitives to represent locally flat surfaces. In surface reconstruction tests, they reduced error by 28.9% against memory-matched 2DGS across 15 DTU scans. On six Tanks and Temples scenes, they achieved the highest mean F1 among compared methods: 34.38%, versus 31.72% for 2DGS.
