What OpenAI’s latest controversy tells us about the future of math

· MIT Technology Review AI ·
OpenAI says its agents solved Navier-Stokes, but the dispute is over whether uncredited human-AI work helped point the way.

MIT Technology Review AI says Buckmaster and Alpöge had posted a major step on a simplified version after nearly a year using public models. OpenAI then presented a proof for the full problem using an internal model, while denying that employees or agents accessed the pair’s transcripts. The piece says the episode raises a harder question for math: if frontier firms can spend millions running thousands of agents, important proofs may move outside normal academic collaboration.
