Document-borne AI worms can self-propagate through Copilot for Word

· HN · Frontpage AI ·
A hidden prompt in one Word document can make Copilot alter later documents and copy the same hidden prompt into them.

The author says the issue was reproduced after Microsoft’s mitigations, including a model upgrade, and remained exploitable at publication. The attack relies on Copilot treating text inside an attached or discovered document as instructions, even when that text is visually hidden from the user. In the PoC, Copilot changed financial figures and appended the malicious prompt in white text, making the new document a carrier. Microsoft handled the report through MSRC, but the post says no customer-side remediation fully closes the class. HN · Frontpage AI's note
