OpenAI buys smartphone camera maker Glass Imaging for $300 million, report says

· TechCrunch AI ·
The reported deal gives OpenAI a team focused on AI-native smartphone image capture, not after-the-fact photo editing.

Glass Imaging was founded by former Apple engineers Ziv Attar and Tom Bishop, who worked on Portrait Mode. Its software trains neural networks around specific phone camera systems to improve images when the shutter clicks. The Wall Street Journal reported the purchase at more than $300 million; OpenAI did not immediately comment to TechCrunch. The piece notes the acquisition alongside reports that OpenAI is exploring hardware, including phones, earbuds, and AI companion devices. TechCrunch AI's note
